Essex firm shakes up the market

From Glastonbury to Harrods, an Essex milkshake maker that cut its teeth by selling exclusively at music festivals is now supplying the cream of the High Street.

Maldon-based Shaken Udder has doubled turnover in 2010 and has product in Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Waitrose and other leading chains.

Continuing to breathe new life into the much maligned sector, the firm has proved that flavour-packed shakes aren't just for the kids.

With very few milkshakes products gracing the supermarket shelves, Shaken Udder has found a niche by bringing nutritionally-balanced, high-quality and flavour-packed shakes to a captive audience.

According to founder Jodie Farran, 2010 has been its best year yet.

“We've had huge success this year. Not only have we doubled our turnover, which is an amazing achievement, but we've also expanded the team and increased our listings.”

Once only available to music festival-goers, Shaken Udder took to the shelves back in 2008 and has since gone from strength to strength, supplying a clear gap in the market.

“We still attend all the music festivals and this year gave out 300,000 samples and 100,000 loyalty cards,” said Jodie. “The best thing is that we can now direct our music fans straight to the shop shelf so they can get their milkshake fix all year round.

“This year we've achieved new listings with Wholefoods, Booths and leading wholesalers such as Suma, Marigold and Giffords Fine Foods. We've also gone from supplying just 90  Waitrose stores to gaining a national listing.”

Although 2010 has been a runaway success for the fledgling firm, 2011 looks set to be just as exciting. “We have plans to increase our product range with new flavours and are waiting to hear about new listing opportunities,” said Jodie.
