Ubisense headcount to rocket as global orders surge

Ubisense CEO Richard Green

Cambridge based Ubisense, the Real Time Location Systems specialist, could increase headcount by 50 per cent in 2012 after winning a cascade of new orders and lining up a potential business bonanza in Asia.

And acquisitions could fast-track the growth process, CEO Richard Green revealed exclusively to Business Weekly.

Green says: “We went from 100 staff at the start of 2011 to 170 by the end of the year. Crystal ball stuff – we could easily be up to 250 people by the end of 2012.

“Cambridge is a great place to be with bags of talent when a technology company is in growth mode and acquisition might be a good way for us to maintain that talent pool.”

Green revealed that the UK-headquartered company had won a surge of new orders with Airbus, truckmaker PACCAR, BMW plus another German automotive company – and broken into Korea by landing a contract with Hyundai.

He said that after a few false dawns for RF technology “This time it looks like its time is ripe – the market makers certainly believe so.”

Green said Ubisense had just held its sales summit at Snetterton racetrack – a suitable location for a company whose lightning-fast growth is at full throttle.

“We had an absolutely stunning year in 2011. We thought the high spot would be the London stockmarket listing in the summer but between then and the end of the year the orders just continued to flow. New contracts are still coming in.”

Prime among these is the signing of a new global licensing agreement with Airbus. Ubisense tracking technology is now installed at 10 Airbus sites – up from three at the start of the relationship.

The relationship with BMW goes from strength to strength, Green reports. The latest installation is a significant one in China, given the company’s growth ambitions in Asia.

At the end of 2011, Ubisense landed a contract with another big German automotive company.

The cup was overflowing when Ubisense clinched a new relationship with PACCAR, the multinational truckmaker headquartered in Washington State.

Now Ubisense has broken into Korea – courtesy a landmark Asian deal with Hyundai. An alliance with Jaguar Land Rover, which has its own ambitions for growth throughout Asia could prove highly significant in the long term.

Green said: “Building a globally successful business is all about having good people; the right talent. We will need a lot more of it this year.

“We have a particular eye on Asia – the automotive and general manufacturing markets – so the Korean breakthrough and working with Jaguar Land Rover could help us leverage more opportunities there.

“We know how lucky we are to be in this position. London is the right place for us to be listed right now. In 12 months time we will appraise the situation and see where we stand and where we need to go.

“The IPO has been good for us. We haven’t had to change the way we run the business in any significant way. We have always run the company as though we were under public scrutiny. From Day One we have been transparent about our finances, management and strategy.

“The only real change is that we have access to the world’s largest financial markets and that furthers our ambitions. It puts us in an even better position to make acquisitions of the right businesses at the appropriate time – just as we acquired two companies following the IPO.”

Having just returned from the Alps on a family bonding session, Green is used to living with altitude. “Life couldn’t be better,” he says. “I’m happy and healthy and have even shed some weight. The moustache has gone for good – it was irritating on the racetrack when I had the crash helmet on!”
