An HR specialist from global technology giant Broadcom Corporation delivered a masterclass on the challenges of managing a global workforce at a Cambridge UK summit.
Jan Brown, HR director EMEA with Broadcom, gave a fascinating insight into the practical issues facing companies that recruited across borders. Her key piece of advice was not to make assumptions in relation to business practices in overseas countries; to instil culture and values; systems and processes and a consistent framework in relation to people issues.
NASDAQ-quoted Broadcom is a global leader and innovator in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications.
She was addressing the third Taylor Vinters international employment law conference at The Moller Centre. More than 20 employment lawyers from across the world and 40 Human Resources directors with responsibility for managing employees overseas attended.
The event was supported by Taylor Vinters’ worldwide network of partner firms with whom they provide multinational clients international employment advice.
Delegates were given comprehensive updates on the latest employment law issues in America, Germany, Spain, and France – and then had one-to-one speed-dating-style sessions with these lawyers and also lawyers from Austria, Belgium, Denmark; Finland, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland.
Roger James, Taylor Vinters’ head of employment law was thrilled with the event: “International employment tax issues were explored by Harvey Smith, director at Deloitte, and international immigration considerations were highlighted, with much questioning from the audience, by Laura Devine who operates a niche immigration law firm in London and New York.”
Jan Brown said: “The conference was a great success and gave me and fellow HR practitioners invaluable operational and strategic insights into the current hot people management issues from a global perspective.”
