Smith succeeds Jones as head of Hewitsons’ property team

Martin Smith

Martin Smith has been named as Hewitsons’ new head of commercial property, replacing long-serving partner, Elizabeth Jones, who is retiring after more than three decades with the law firm.

Smith, who joined Hewitsons in July, will be working closely alongside partners Graeme Sampson and James Simpson.

He has over 20 years experience and started his career at Gouldens (now Jones Day) in 1990, after graduating from the University of Oxford.

In 1997 he joined Cameron McKenna and was then appointed at Wildes in 1999 as a Senior Assistant, before being promoted to partner in 2000. He then joined London firm, Finers Stephens Innocent (FSI) in 2001, where he was head of real estate.

Since beginning her career at Hewitsons’ Cambridge office in the early 1980s, Elizabeth Jones has worked across a broad cross section of both private and public sector clients, advising on all types of commercial property matters.

She was recently named a leading individual in the latest edition of the respected legal directory Chambers, being described by satisfied clients as a “top-class lawyer who is always in control of a deal.”

John Dix, managing partner at Hewitsons, said: “We are truly grateful for the outstanding service and commitment Elizabeth has shown the firm over the past 30 years and we all wish her a very happy retirement. Stepping into her shoes, Martin is extremely capable and experienced and is ready to drive forwards this side of the firm.”
