Ones2Watch are next generation hopefuls

Dr Dan Cvrcek

Investors and professional services companies have been handed a wish list of companies to follow for future business opportunities in Business Weekly’s Killer50 and associated Ones2Watch listings.

Ones2Watch highlights the companies likely to vault into the list of the 50 most disruptive technology businesses at any given moment. It also flags up the companies most likely to scale up on a global basis.

Thirty-one companies make our updated Ones2Watch and they are not just startups. Many of these businesses have been on the boil for a while or their technology has inevitably morphed into something different from the original vision.

Their time has come as global markets have also evolved and broadened. Encouragingly, many of these companies reflect the renewed vibrancy and diversity of the region’s BioMedTech cluster. They’re all good companies but we particularly like the credentials of Abcodia, whose chairman is serial biotech entrepreneur Andy Richards.

It’s a new Cambridge company that validates and discovers molecular biomarkers for disease diagnosis and screening. Ditto Health Analytics, which was one of two Cambridge companies (the other was Killer50 business CTC) at this week’s inaugural Innovation Launch Pad in Downing Street. Health Analytics provides detailed information about a local population’s health through combined data analysis from primary and secondary care sources. Its users can analyse their population’s health and predict future health trends from our easy to use web systems.

Among the new kids on the block, Popcode is eyecatching. This is a young Cambridge company that has created a new mobile phone app that brings stunning animation and audio capability to the printed page.

The Popcode app sparks into life static graphics and data on all kinds of printed material.Point your phone at the picture of a flame and it will blaze into animated life and flicker in front of your eyes. Bare facts are transformed into illuminating commentary. It is now enabled for Apple iOS and Android phones.

We also like ideaSpace-based Smart Architects which launched the sCrib – a memory stick-style device which stores ultra secure passwords and is designed to give computers extra protection against hackers.

The pocket-sized Enigma machine produces secure 20 character passwords. The device plugs into the USB port of your computer and, at the touch of a button, enters the password the user selected. Designer Dr Dan Cvrcek is a former banking security specialist.
