Croatia and South Africa in the spotlight
My last blog talked about UKTI’s Olympic events. This week, we have our final two, on ICT on Wednesday in Ipswich and Digital and Creative Media on Friday at the Hauser Forum in Cambridge.
Having attended the others, one that will stick in my mind is last month’s event on Renewable Energy in Great Yarmouth.
The live streaming element worked well and we went on to hear from several commercial officers from markets with good opportunities in this sector.
Heledd Poole, normally based in Stockholm, was at the event in person and we talked to the others through a mixture of remote technologies including Skype and WebEx.
It wasn’t easy and the results added force to the argument for better broadband in some parts of the region but despite the technical challenges we managed a two-way link of real benefit to the companies attending.
Reading up on a country or pulling market information from the net is great but to make sense of what you see you really need to speak to someone who knows their stuff.

Organised in conjunction with Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce and Barclays, this event will give you the chance to hear from Raksha Maharaj, a colleague from UKTI South Africa and from Jacob Mothopeng, Marketing officer for Trade at the South African High Commission.
The subjects covered will include market opportunities, working with South African Distributors, workplace law and setting up in South Africa as well as a slot from Barclays on the essential topic of getting paid.
In addition, UKTI is setting up a series of larger, “taster” missions to European markets designed to appeal to novice exporters across England. Our first “taster" mission – we’re calling these Export Insight and you’ll be hearing a lot more from me on that subject in future – is going to Croatia on 24 October. Companies will travel to Split for a briefing from the British Embassy team, presentations from the Enterprise Europe Network, business meetings and a day at the SASO International trade fair which attracted 2000 exhibitors in 2011.
The goal of the 3-day mission is to show UK companies just how easy it is to visit and do business in an overseas market. We're able to keep the cost very affordable for companies not yet exporting and with Croatia due to join the EU in July 2013 once member states have ratified, opportunities there are well worth a look.
There really is nothing better than seeing a market for yourself, and UKTI has plenty of options to help you do that over the coming months.
