Mexico export boost for telecoms firm
Hitchin telecoms company, Tekmos Communications, has expanded into Mexico with advice from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).
The company was part of a UKTI trade mission to Mexico in February which has already resulted in over £25,000 of new business with more expected.
Tekmos was established in 1995. With the rapid speed of change in telecoms there is a diminishing need for products manufactured by Tekmos in the UK and Western Europe as fibre optics replace copper cable in networks.
But the market in the rest of the world remains largely untapped and, while nearly 70 per cent of Tekmos’ revenue comes from exports, the help provided by UKTI is enabling them to explore new markets.
Sales manager Peter Stimpson said: “Working with UKTI helped to raise our profile and open doors in Mexico. We are a small company but, with help from the trade team at the British Consulate who made initial contacts for us, we were able to secure a contract with a distributor on our first visit. This is something we could never have achieved on our own.”
Tekmos was introduced last summer to Noel Harvey, International Trade Adviser for UKTI, and together they developed an export strategy as part of UKTI’s Passport to Export programme. The company decided to target Mexico and went on to commission an Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) report which provided detailed information on the state of the market there, as well as leads for potential distributors.
Stimpson added: “We gave the British Consulate a profile of the sort of companies we were looking for and a brief to solicit interest. By chance UKTI was organising a trade mission to Mexico that we were able to join.
“We found the help in preparing for the mission invaluable – UKTI provided briefing sessions on all aspects of the country, including its culture, as well as introductory Spanish lessons.
“UKTI and the backing of the British Government via the locally based trade teams helps to raise our profile and open far more doors than a small company such as ours could do on our own.
“Looking to the future we see Mexico as a gateway to other countries in central and South America as well as to North America via the existing free trade agreement.”
