Hello Dubai as UK companies target export spree at The Retail Summit 2019

A healthy delegation of companies from the East of England were in Dubai this week targeting new business in the United Arab Emirates.

Nine retail companies from the region attended The Retail Summit 2019 to showcase innovative British products.

The two-day event brought together over 800 senior executives from the food & drink, fashion, homeware and beauty sectors. The summit also attracted an impressive line-up of international market leaders to speak at the event, including Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson, New Balance’s VP of global marketing Chris Davis and Julie Hamilton, chief customer and commercial leadership officer from Coca-Cola.

The initiative was organised by Exemplas Trade Services Ltd (ETSL), the delivery partner for the Department for International Trade in the East of England.

One business hoping to write its own success story through the mission was Norwich-based pen company Onoto.

The company produces a variety of luxury pens, including ones made entirely of sterling silver and gold, worth up to £5,000. They also offer more affordable acrylic pens, or can be commissioned to produce bespoke pens with precious metals and stones.

Director Feng Li said: “Currently there is a big push from pen companies to target collectors, but we’re looking to explore the corporate gifting market. In the Middle East we know there is a culture of giving high value corporate gifts, so we believe there is a really big opportunity to capitalise on this.”

Sandra Duke, head of wholesale at another delegate business, The Cambridge Satchel Company, said: “In the past we have had a small amount of success in the Middle East but nothing that has been cemented so we were keen to join the Retail Summit to try to develop Cambridge Satchel’s presence in these markets,”

Other companies in the East of England delegation were: Amara Living, iCandy, Down to Science,, The PÜRE Collection, Tia Dorraine and Tropika.
