Cambridge app drives Land Rover smartphone

The ViewRanger app designed in Cambridge is being pre-installed on the new Land Rover Explore phone, launched this spring, thanks to a global partnership with Bullitt Group and its licensing partner Land Rover.

The rugged outdoor Land Rover Explore has been designed for people who live for adventure and need a phone that can survive whatever it’s put through.

The Explore features enhanced durability and a powerful battery, has been drop-tested, can survive underwater (including salt water), and is built to cope with extreme temperatures.

ViewRanger has optimised its award-winning Android app to work with the advanced capabilities of the Explore. Special touches include free access for all Explore Adventure Pack users to ViewRanger’s premium topographic maps for one of 16 countries – including Great Britain, USA, Canada, France and Germany. The app also uses the phone’s built-in barometer to display accurate altitude readings.

The Land Rover Explore launches with the Adventure Pack, bringing GPS handheld capabilities to the smartphone straight out of the box.

The pack can replace the need for a separate GPS device with its powerful GPS patch antenna, additional battery and premium topographic mapping with Skyline augmented reality courtesy of ViewRanger. Designed in close collaboration with Land Rover, the smartphone takes key design cues from the Land Rover Discovery.
