Atmel licenses video subsystem from Herts company

Atmel Corporation, one of the world’s leading providers of microcontrollers, has licensed the ARC video subsystem from Herts-based semiconductor specialist, ARC International.

Tassos Markas, director of multimedia at Atmel Corpor-ation, said: “ARC’s video subsystem was compelling because it met the necessary criteria of low-cost and small size, while observing our power budget.”

The contract follows hot on the heels of the decision by Taiwanese system-on-chip pioneer, AVID Electronics, to also license ARC’s video subsystem for digital audio and video applications.

AVID was the first company in the world to develop an SoC for CD-based audio players, and now commands close to a quarter of that market, while ARC introduced the world’s first configurable video subsystem just months ago.
