CLA hosts Brexit event for Cambridgeshire farmers and landowners

Cambridgeshire farmers and landowners are being asked to share their views on Brexit at a special CLA event to be held at the Duxford Lodge Hotel on Friday September 16 (2.30-4.30pm).

As new Ministers and officials begin to draft fresh strategies that will affect the agricultural and environmental landscape for generations to come, the organisation wants to capture the thoughts of its members on the opportunities and risks surrounding the decision to leave the European Union.

Director of policy Christopher Price will address the meeting, outlining what the CLA is currently doing on behalf of its members, before leading a discussion on key issues such as the Common Agricultural Policy and what could replace it; the UK’s approach to trade negotiations with the EU and the rest of the world; the opportunities and risks of changes to regulations; and the future of labour supply.

CLA East regional director Ben Underwood said: “Extricating the UK from the EU will be a enormous challenge for the Government. It will require skilled international negotiations, careful planning, and significant consultation with businesses from every economic sector.

“It is at times like these that everyone involved in agriculture in this country must work together to ensure our industry is heard as the policies and priorities of post-Brexit Britain are scoped out.

“The CLA is actively seeking the input of its members and this is one of the reasons why the organisation wants them to share their views on what they need to help them prepare for, and manage, the risks of Brexit.

“We know that our farmers and food producers want to continue providing the country with a safe, secure supply of food, while land managers want to carry on their good work improving nature and wildlife, helping to tackle climate change and managing our distinctive landscapes. We want to help them achieve those goals.

“It is important our members have their say in what is a once in a generation opportunity to shape the future of our industry. Together we can put farming in the best position to grasp the opportunities ahead.”
