Nissan drives growth in Bedfordshire

Nissan’s decision to build its Qashqai model in Britain will have spin-off benefits for its nervecentre in Bedfordshire, according to the CBI.

The decision, announced after talks with Prime Minister David Cameron, means Nissan will be investing £192 million and safeguarding 6,000 jobs. While production will be at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, Cranfield is Nissan’s pan-European centre of excellence for technology so will therefore benefit directly from any increased manufacturing in the UK.

Richard Tunnicliffe, CBI East of England regional director said: “This major investment from Nissan is great news for the UK economy and crucially will secure thousands of jobs in Sunderland and Bedfordshire.

“Nissan’s choice to build its Qashqai model here is a testament to the excellence of British manufacturing and the skills and technical expertise of the workforce in this country.

“UK manufacturing has already been shown to be at the vanguard of the economic recovery and the strength and world-class reputation of the car-building sector here will make it a valuable contributor to growth and job creation.” • Photograph shows: Nissan Technical Centre Europe, Cranfield
