MRC scientists in Cambridge honoured

Dr Andrew McKenzieTwo Medical Research Council scientists in Cambridge have received top honours.

 

Dr Sean Munro, a group leader in the Cell Biology Division of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Dr Munro is distinguished for his outstanding research into the organisation of the internal membranes of the cells that make up the human body and the movement of specific proteins within cells.

The Royal Society seeks to promote excellence in science through its Fellowship and Foreign membership. Each year, the Royal Society elects 44 distinguished scientists who have made substantial contributions to the improvement of knowledge in the sciences.

Dr Andrew McKenzie, a group leader from the Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry Division of the LMB has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

His research investigates how the cells in the immune system communicate by sending out protein messengers that are received by other cells and cause them to switch on specific functions.

Dr McKenzie’s focus is on the immune response caused by allergic asthma which is triggered by an abnormal reaction to a variety of allergens. This work has potential for treating asthma.

The Academy promotes the translation of advances in medical science into benefits for patients. Fellowship is given for outstanding contributions to the advancement of medical sciences.
