Fertility firm scales in US with new CEO
Cambridge Temperature Concepts, the UK business that has developed a pioneering fertility monitor at a fraction of the cost of IVF, is scaling up in the United States under a new CEO.
Shamus Husheer has stepped aside to a high-powered CTO role to ensure new CEO Claire Hooper has the ammunition technology-wise to hit the company’s ambitious US growth targets.
Leading Cambridge entrepreneurs who back the business are excited about the new momentum they believe Hooper can bring to CTC – she has a successful; track record in scaling companies across the Pond.
Hooper has founded a number of companies and taken businesses to the US before – and sold three of them – and evaluated more than 40 targets in corporate M & A, leading to eight acquisitions.
In addition to her PhD in Biochemistry, she is from Cambridge and has worked with founders commercialising their businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
Hooper has built businesses from a standing start to enterprises turning over tens of millions and spearheaded strategies that have led to hundreds of millions in revenues.
Investors say that Hooper has exploited complex IP-based technology platforms and built long lasting B2B partnerships – and all this in life-sciences and in a combination of women’s health and devices.
The introduction came from investor and co-chair of the board, Andy Richards. Hooper was serving as an NED at a board he chaired and he was impressed by her strategic knowledge, international outlook yet pragmatic approach to company building.
Hooper has been with CTC since the summer as a consultant and latterly as CEO-elect and has taken CEO and director roles with immediate effect, based at CTC’s Cambridge Science Park HQ.
An inside source told Business Weekly: “We have hired Claire precisely to scale up CTC in America. She has done it before very successfully, which is why we are so excited.
“Shamus has moved to CTO role where he will be focusing his efforts on enhancing and protecting the platform and helping us improve DuoFertility so we hit those milestones in the business plan and achieve our aims. We salute Shamus – and our founding team – for building a phenomenal platform from which to scale the business.”Husheer said: “Claire joined us over the summer to bring in the experience and commercial knowledge that the founding team of graduate scientists have lacked and we are delighted that she has agreed to take the lead in the next phase.
“I have always had to juggle the dual role of CEO and CTO, which has been a challenge as we have been both fundraising and developing the next generation of our product in parallel.
“So bringing in someone with the depth of experience to drive the business forward will allow us as a team to execute much more effectively on the significant technology and business challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
