Cambridge stars on show at new gaming event

Play is vital to our development – something all humans (and many animals) do. Research conducted at Cambridge University shows that when we play, it prepares us for all the surprises and challenges of life. So to play is an important skill for modern living.

To inspire people to follow that path, e-Luminate Cambridge has teamed up with Pat Kane to bring together an amazing collection of writers, performers, artists, academics, gamers and scientists for a one day event on February 13, 2017. The Cambridge Corn Exchange will be hosting a series of talks on the theme of play by illustrious speakers, including one of Cambridge's own gaming legends: David Braben. At the Guildhall, e-Luminate will be staging its first ever e-sports event – featuring the stars of the Cambridge games community. Attendees can sample a range of cutting edge AR and VR games.

Braben is called ‘the giant of computer games in the UK”. He was creator of the strategy game Elite, which blazed a trail for many others in the field. The Frontier Developments founder will show how computer games – and the spirit of play – are central to our culture today.

Pat Kane – curator of Nesta’s FutureFest, writer and musician – said: “Computer games literally 'play with light' – the pixels on the screen driven by software, both coming together to create these fabulous worlds that we can explore and delight in. It's great, and highly appropriate, that e-Luminate Cambridge is embracing play and games this year and I've had enormous fun curating this event, particularly in such a creative place, with such a powerful games sector.”

Mark Green at Guerrilla Cambridge says: “We are delighted to be showing RIGS Mechanized Combat League and welcoming the Cambridge community to meet some of the team behind it.”

The organisers are welcoming more companies to come on board and showcase their games. There will be experts at hand on the day to show guests the ropes.
