Frontier ships over 50 million radio chips

Frontier Smart Technologies, a world-leading provider of consumer Digital Radio technology, reveals that it has shipped over 50 million DAB and Smart Radio chips.

Frontier, which has business operations in Sawston near Cambridge, supplies chips and modules to all leading consumer audio brands active in digital radio. Customers include Sony, Panasonic, Bose, Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, TechniSat, Hama, Grundig, Pure, and many more.

The UK company offers a complete range of digital radio solutions – from low cost DAB chips and modules, through to automotive aftermarket software and its newest Smart Radio solution which combines DAB radio, FM radio, internet radio, on-demand music services and podcasts in a single solution.

At the heart of all these products are the company’s Kino 4 and Chorus 4 chips, the world’s first integrated chips for consumer DAB and Smart Radio devices.

WorldDAB recently reported global DAB sales of 75 million units across consumer and automotive devices. Frontier’s 50 million units represent two thirds of those sales.

Prospects for consumer digital radio sales over the next three years have been boosted by record listening in established DAB markets in Europe and Australia; the expansion of digital radio services in Austria, France and Belgium; and the introduction of legislation in France and Italy requiring all new consumer radios to have DAB+ from 2020.

CEO Anthony Sethill said: “This is a major milestone for Frontier – reflecting the company’s leadership role in the international development of digital radio over nearly 20 years.

“Our teams place a consistent emphasis on delivering high quality, reliable solutions. Our current priorities include adding wireless connectivity to DAB radios, improving the user interfaces of devices through colour display support, and driving down the cost of technology to increase end-user adoption.

“We will continue to work closely with industry partners to drive the uptake of digital radio around the world.”
