Imray’s £40k crowdfunding campaign sets sail

Nautical data specialist Imray has launched a crowdfunding campaign designed to raise £40k to hand sailors around the globe unprecedented digital information.

The St Ives-based company has put an all-or-nothing deadline of July 8 on the fundraise and says the project will not go ahead if it fails to hit the target by that time.

The hot money is on Imray riding the crest of a new wave rather than drifting onto the rocks.

The company is rich in maritime history: It dates back to 1904 and can trace its roots to the mid-1700s. Imray is still owned and run by descendants of the original founders.

Its small expert team of cartographers, editors, product designers and operations staff work closely with the sailing community to commission, publish and distribute a comprehensive range of charts and cruising guides for popular sailing areas worldwide.

The new venture – Explore with Imray – is launched in partnership with Cambridge Science Park company Eastpoint Software and aims to get even more quality, verified data into the hands of sailors.

Imray has a red-hot reputation for providing bespoke and tailored data in the form of nautical charts and pilot books for the sailing community, and customers have been asking for this in a more advanced digital format.

Managing director Lucy Wilson said: “We are thrilled to be launching Explore with Imray that combines the advances of technology and our detailed navigation information.

“Our customers are at the heart of everything we do and we know they want our detailed pilot information digitally and the chance to interact with others and share their stories on a social platform.

"There is still strong demand for our charts and books but customers want to complement that with digital.”

Imray gathers information from verified data sources, authors, cruising clubs and direct from customers to bring together the charts and pilot books for sailors.

This new way to see data online makes it even easier to access this valuable information and at the same time brings the Imray community even closer together.

Up until now Imray and Eastpoint Software have invested heavily in Explore with Imray, but crowdfunding gives the business the chance to accelerate that at greater speed and get customers involved.

There are a number of benefits to those who get involved, including 50 per cent off cruising information for life and the chance to give feedback on how the tool is developed.

• So far almost £7k has been raised. For more details on the Crowdfunding campaign and to get involved, visit the Kickstarter page.
