Smart labels deal hands PragmatIC another global edge
Cambridge-based PragmatIC, a world leader in ultra-low-cost flexible electronics, has again shown its eye for a market-leading growth opportunity through a tie-up with German smart labels specialist Schreiner MediPharm.
Schreiner, which is also a commercial force in the US and China, provides specialty labels for the pharmaceutical and medical device industry.
The partners will add smart labels based on PragmatIC’s ConnectIC® family of flexible integrated circuits into Schreiner MediPharm’s product portfolio.
Dr Thomas Schweizer, President of Schreiner MediPharm, said: ”PragmatIC’s unique solutions will enable us to add connectivity and intelligence to a much wider range of products than was previously possible.
“We are developing innovative smart labels for packaging and multiple device types that will improve usability and safety for both patients and healthcare professionals.”
The use of RFID in the pharmaceutical industry offers a variety of applications through the assignment of a unique ID, which is practically non-reproducible: For instance, secure identification and traceability of individual products in devices and processes.
But to date it mainly has been adopted only in high value use cases because of cost. The revolutionary ConnectIC devices deliver RFID solutions at the lowest cost point in the market, sweeping away the cost issue.
FlexICs are ultra-thin and flexible, which makes them suitable for embedding into a wide range of substrates used for the innovative functional labels of Schreiner MediPharm.
Scott White, CEO of PragmatIC, said: “This partnership with Schreiner MediPharm highlights how our ground-breaking ConnectIC product line is set to accelerate the deployment of RFID-based digital solutions in the healthcare sector.
“We are really pleased to see adoption of our technology by leading global suppliers like Schreiner MediPharm and look forward to working closely with them to develop new use cases for their products.”
PragmatIC is a world leader in ultra-low-cost flexible electronics, enabling the potential for trillions of smart objects that can engage with consumers and their environments. Its unique technology platform delivers flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs) that are thinner than a human hair and can be easily embedded into everyday objects.
Products are being adopted by a growing base of global companies across diverse markets, including consumer goods, games, retail, pharmaceutical and security sectors.
PragmatIC's first product family, the ConnectIC® series of RFID FlexICs, was launched in February. Within two months it received orders for over 20 million units from customers in Europe, North America and Asia.
