TeraView shares in £191m megafund with 6G technology play

TeraView, a Cambridge based world leader in terahertz technology, has earned a share of a £191 million megafund administered by Innovate UK.

The award is specifically targeted at TeraView’s cutting edge technology for next generation 6G network applications. TeraView’s exact share of the pot is undisclosed.

TeraView has a vision to use its expertise and intellectual property to develop the building blocks of future 6G networks, which will use terahertz (THz) frequencies.

As a knowledge and IP-rich company with decades of experience operating at THz frequencies, TeraView can bring the breadth and depth of its experience to accelerate the development of 6G.

Wireless connectivity is increasingly an important component of society and people’s everyday lives. The exponential growth in demand for high bandwidth applications such as multimedia streaming, the Internet of Things, control of autonomous vehicles and cloud computing has triggered the need for development of new technologies to provide high-bandwidth, reliable links in wireless environments, a key goal of future 6G networks.

Uniquely 6G is also targeted to deliver other functions such as accurate positional information and imaging to support applications such a virtual reality.

Innovate UK executive chair Dr Ian Campbell, said “In these difficult times we have seen the best of British business innovation. The pandemic is not just a health emergency but one that impacts society and the economy.

“TeraView’s 6G technology, along with every initiative Innovate UK has supported through this fund, is an important step forward in driving sustainable economic development. Each one is also helping to realise the ambitions of hard-working people.”

Dr Don Arnone, chief executive officer and co-founder of TeraView, added: “As the first company to work at terahertz frequencies and to pioneer many new applications, TeraView is uniquely positioned to develop the key building blocks of future 6G networks.

“This is truly exciting prospect for our team and our technology to make 6G a reality, TeraView seeks partnerships with other companies and organisations with backgrounds in wireless communications.”
