Port of Felixstowe extends rail reach

The 33rd daily rail freight service has been introduced at the Port of Felixstowe and will be operated by GB Railfreight to the DB Cargo site in Rotherham.

New triple wagons will ultimately make the train 45 wagons in length, allowing GB to further increase its capacity at the port and across the network.

Managing director John Smith said: “Following the decline of core commodities such as coal and steel, it is important that we continue to look for growth opportunities in alternative markets such as intermodal.”

Frank Newell, MDof Newell & Wright Transport, added: “As a well-established container haulier for over 40 years and working with most major shipping lines we could see there was a gap in the market for a rail terminal in the Yorkshire area. Opening/operating our first rail terminal in Rotherham gives us further opportunities with our customer base.”
