Mills & Reeve accelerates global expansion

Graeme Menzies

Cambridge UK law firm Mills & Reeve is strengthening its global network of legal collaborators to help propel clients into exciting new markets.

A programme of meetings with Graf von Westphalen, one of the leading independent law firms in Germany, is the latest example of the firm’s accelerating outreach.

Other delegations from the firm are jetting off for missions in Europe and the US. One initiative in Nashville promises a payback for the Cambridge technology cluster in the healthcare sector.

With the bulk of international patent litigation now taking place in the UK or Germany, Mills & Reeve and Graf von Westphalen are looking at a possible collaboration with specific targets in the technology and food and beverage sectors in the US.

Partner Graeme Menzies, who organised the meeting and has been a driving force behind Mills & Reeve’s international activity for many years, said: “This was another very positive meeting and we’re clearly excited at the current opportunities in patent litigation and corporate M & A. Our main aim ultimately is to attract more US business into Europe.”

This is an exciting time for Mills & Reeve, with the stunning new Botanic House office opening in Cambridge in January 2013 and the firm beginning to roll out its new 2015 Vision, which will shape the direction it takes over the next three years.

The new business plan clearly confirms Mills & Reeve’s vision to be a major UK law firm renowned for its outstanding service to national and international clients, a collaborative culture and deep sector expertise.

To help with that international focus Terry Gould, a long-serving partner in the Norwich office, has been installed as international project leader.

The international 'project’ is already picking up pace with Mills & Reeve delegations shortly heading to Utrecht, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Chicago, NYC and Nashville.

Nashville hosts the headquarters of some 60 per cent of the hospital beds in America and with strong health sector expertise in the UK, Mills & Reeve has been invited to visit potential new clients in the region.

The visit will include a meeting at the global HQ of AmSurg Corporation, the largest US healthcare business listed on NASDAQ. Mills & Reeve advised AmSurg on its launch in the UK and with various projects with leading NHS Foundation Trusts.

Mills & Reeve has worked on projects for clients in more than 40 jurisdictions in the last 12 months, with lawyers taking secondments in countries as diverse as China, India and Qatar.

Graeme Menzies said: “Even in August we’ve been incredibly busy looking at issues for clients in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Seychelles, Cape Verde, Turkey and Egypt, as well as the more usual pastures of Hong Kong, the US and India.”

Menzies is preparing to fly out for a trial in Kuala Lumpur.
