East Anglian law firm Kester Cunningham John is set for further growth following a number of senior promotions to partner level. East Anglian law firm Kester Cunningham John is set for further growth following a number of senior promotions to partner level.

The firm, which has offices in Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, has appointed five new partners, making a total of 28 partners and over 200 members of staff.

These appointments follow hard on the heels of KCJ making several other senior appointments from US firm White and Case, Slaughter and May and from Barclays Global Investors, whose Duncan Walker joined the firm’s corporate team after heading Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Europe.

Managing partner Simon Smith says: “2005 and 2006 thus far, has been a hugely successful period for the firm across all areas, with more key appointments in the pipeline.

“Last year, we acted on business deals worth £512 million helped by our very specific regional profile along the Cambridge/Norwich axis whilst our private client practice continues to benefit from the buoyant regional economy.”

Company/Commercial team leader, Edward O’Rourke, becomes the fourth partner within this highly successful department. He joined the firm in 2004 and acts in a variety of corporate finance and commercial work including mergers and acquisitions of all types and sizes.

He is an experienced panel lawyer for one of the major clearing banks, and has acted for both some of the region's largest businesses.

Simon Cunningham becomes the eighth partner within the commercial property team. He has worked for the firm since 1997 and deals with investment property work, including both freehold and leasehold property. He has a particular interest in agricultural property and in the sale and purchase of farms, farm business tenancies and the Single Farm Payment regime.

Family solicitor, Sue Varty, specialises in more complicated and high net worth matters with a particular interest in pensions and investment assets. A high proportion of her cases have an international element. She is a trained collaborative lawyer and is a primary trainer of financial professionals in the only collaborative training offered to date to non lawyers in the UK.

Team leader, Trefine Maynard, becomes a partner in what is East Anglia’s top clinical negligence claimant team. She joined the firm in 1993 following an early career with the Ministry of Defence. She specialises in all areas of medicine including delay in cancer diagnosis, cerebral palsy and catastrophic injury cases, for which she has achieved multi million pound settlements.

Elsewhere in the firm, Simon Davis, who joined the firm’s personal injury team in 2001 also becomes a partner. He specialises in catastrophic spinal and head injury cases, with particular emphasis on industrial and motorcycle accidents.

He has extensive experience in disease litigation, especially asbestos related cases, and has previously acted for the Medical and Dental Defence Union Of Scotland, leading insurance companies and Lloyd’s Syndicates.
