Half term but no half measures for Stansted's sunseekers

London Stansted is set to welcome up to 840,000 passengers to the airport during the upcoming October half-term holiday as families take advantage of the final chance for some sunshine before the colder months set in.

Between Saturday 25 October and Sunday 2 November, passengers will be heading to popular destinations across Europe and beyond, with Turkey, the Canary Islands, Spain, and Portugal among the top choices for short-haul escapes. For those travelling further afield, Dubai, Amman and destinations across North Africa remain firm favourites for guaranteed warmth.

Across the half-term period, around 400,000 passengers are expected to depart from Stansted, with 440,000 arriving in the UK. Sunday 26 and Monday 27 October are forecast to be the busiest days, with more than 52,000 passengers set to fly-out on the Sunday alone.

Anita Harrison, Customer Operations Director at London Stansted, said: “The October half-term is always a really busy and exciting time for us as families head off to enjoy a well-earned break. We’re expecting strong passenger numbers again this year, with many making the most of the last opportunity for some sunshine before winter. Our teams will be on hand throughout the week to help passengers enjoy a smooth start to their journeys, whether they’re heading to Europe’s beaches or further afield.”

Here’s a look at some of the most popular autumn sun destinations from London Stansted this half-term:

Tenerife – Average highs of 22°C and a mix of beaches, volcanic landscapes, and family-friendly attractions make this Canary Island a firm favourite.

Alicante – With 18°C days and plenty of coastal charm, visitors can enjoy local tapas, waterfront walks, and mild evenings.

Faro – The Algarve’s capital combines soft winter light, historic streets, and seaside restaurants just minutes from the airport.

Dubai – Guaranteed sunshine, beaches, and world-class attractions make it a top choice for those looking to go further afield.

Madeira – A haven for walkers and nature lovers, offering year-round mild weather and dramatic ocean views.

Antalya, Dalaman and Izmir – Turkey’s coastline continues to attract passengers seeking Mediterranean warmth and culture.

Palma de Mallorca – A classic short break destination with beaches, lively markets, and historic charm.

Marrakesh, Agadir, Fez, Rabat, Tangier and Essaouira – North Africa’s vibrant cities and coastal escapes are proving increasingly popular with travellers seeking culture and sunshine.

Amman (Jordan) – Offering ancient history, warm hospitality, and easy access to the Dead Sea and Petra, Jordan is fast becoming a favourite for those looking for adventure and winter warmth.
