The acquisition builds on the success of a two-year initiative between Wave and Infersens, financed by the Market Improvement Fund, which was set up to fund and innovative projects.

The project is deploying 1,000 remote flow and temperature sensors across a range of non-household customer sites to test how smart sensing can reduce water demand while maintaining water safety in Legionella risk management activities.

Founded by Dr Jana Voigt and Colin Payne, InferSens’ sensor technology uses state-of-the-art silicon, leading-edge DL models and innovative mechanical and systems-engineering to break the logjam of power consumption vs. performance. Colin Payne is joining Wave Utilities as Head of Product Innovation.

The acquisition marks a key milestone in Wave’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability across the UK’s non-household water sector. Infersens’ flagship technology, Cortense®, a non-invasive, wireless sensor system that monitors water flow and temperature in real-time, will be integrated into Wave’s service offering.

The trials have already demonstrated that the technology has real potential to reduce water waste and improve compliance with Legionella regulations. Infersens’ sensors are being used in universities, hotels, government buildings and commercial real estate.

The technology is helping organisations reduce unnecessary flushing and manual temperature checks – activities that account for up to 8 per cent of total non-household water consumption in the UK.

Wave will continue to support existing Infersens customers and expand the deployment of Cortense® sensors through its commercial and public sector partnerships.

Lucy Darch, Chief Executive Officer at Wave, said: “Infersens has developed truly transformative technology that aligns perfectly with our mission to help businesses use water more efficiently and safely. By bringing its assets and expertise into Wave, we’re accelerating our ability to offer smart, scalable solutions to our customers."

Durham-headquartered Wave recently became the first company to be crowned ‘Water Retailer of the Year’ for the third time at the 2025 Water Industry Awards in Birmingham. Having achieved its initial water saving target 12 months early, Wave is now committed to 19 million m3 water savings by 2030.
