Laboratories and offices in Bourn, South Cambridgeshire, are to be the scene for the next phase of business growth for University of Cambridge spin-out William Oak Diagnostics as it builds on its success in the field of addressing micronutritional deficiencies and transformation of at-home diagnostics capabilities.

Eddisons has confirmed that it has let circa 2,500 sq ft of commercial laboratory and office space in Bourn’s Bertarelli Building to the firm as it moves from its startup premises at the University’s West Campus site this month.

Founded by Dr Alex Patto, CEO, and Tim Dwyer, CTO, two and a half years ago, William Oak Diagnostics has grown to a headcount of six. But with plans to recruit and further expand the business to accelerate the development of its current products, designed for ‘point-of-care’ and B2B markets, the firm began to look for larger premises at the start of 2025.

William Oak Diagnostics was launched in January 2023; Dr Patto had lost his 7-week-old son in September 2020 to vitamin K deficiency, an easily preventable condition. Unlike complex diseases such as cancer or neurodegeneration, nutritional deficiencies are simple to treat, if identified early. William Oak Diagnostics was founded with a clear vision to make nutritional testing simple, accessible, and actionable for everyone.

According to Dr Patto, the Bertarelli Building in Bourn provided the right type of accommodation and location in which to take the business on to its next stage.

He explains: “The fact that laboratories are already fitted means we don’t have the cost, inconvenience and delay of installation. The offices are of a quality that meet our needs and the reputation of Bourn as a site of pioneering clinical research is well acknowledged. We’re looking forward to William Oak Diagnostics growing rapidly in this 22-acre parkland setting.”

Ben Green, who led Eddisons’ agency in the letting of the space at the Bertarelli Building to William Oak Diagnostics, advises that there is further laboratory and office space available in the building, ranging from 1,680 sq ft to 8,321 sq ft, with flexible lease terms that are suited to companies looking to similarly scale-up their Cambridge operations.
