What a ‘tweet’ as Twitter boosts campaign


A fundraising campaign launched on Twitter is helping to raise vital capital for a proposed new Centre for Computing History in Cambridge.

The social networking campaign raised over £1000 for the project in a matter of hours after the first Tweet.Jason Fitzpatrick, who is spearheading the campaign, told Business Weekly that the campaign had gathered “fantastic momentum.” “So could it really be possible for an online virtual community to play a direct part in creating a real life computer museum?” he asks on Twitter.At the current rate of progress, Twitter’s tweeting flock of followers could ensure that the historic project comes home to roost.As Business Weekly first revealed, the project has already obtained substantial backing from Cambridge technology stalwarts RedGate Software and ARM Holdings. Serial tech entrepreneur Dr Hermann Hauser also told Business Weekly exclusively that such a centre was a must for Cambridge to preserve its heritage in personal computing. “It would be wonderful if a Computer Museum was opened in Cambridge to celebrate the many historic milestones Cambridge University and local companies have contributed to,” he told Business Weekly CEO, Tony Quested.Jason Fitzpatrick adds: “Our groundbreaking, grand ambition of establishing a computing history museum in Cambridge is looking more and more achievable every day.”The Trustees in the project need to find around 10,000 sq ft of suitable, dry premises as close as possible to the Cambridge city centre. It could be in two neighbouring properties.They are also seeking donations to underpin the transfer of items from their current home in haverhill and also to preserve them on an ongoing basis.The collection traces the history of a technology revolution and includes mechanical calculators, an Altair 8800 from 1975 (issue number three), a Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Acorn Atom.
